Metal fabrication is a cornerstone of modern manufacturing, providing the backbone for industries ranging from construction to aerospace. At Newinds, we pride ourselves on mastering a variety of metal manufacturing techniques to meet the diverse needs of our clients. Let’s delve into the world of metal fabrication and uncover the processes that shape the industry.
WHAT IS METAL FABRICATION?
Metal fabrication is a manufacturing process that involves cutting, forming, machining, and assembling metal materials to produce finished or semi-finished components and structures. This process applies to a wide range of metals, including steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, and is used across industries such as construction, manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure.
METAL FABRICATION TECHNIQUES
Cutting
This is the first stage in the fabrication process, where the metal is cut into smaller sections to meet the required dimensions, shapes, and tolerances specified in the technical drawings. Common cutting methods today include laser cutting, waterjet cutting, electric shearing, plasma arc cutting, and die cutting for thicker metal materials.
Casting
Unlike other metal fabrication methods such as cutting, bending, stamping, or welding, casting is the process of pouring molten metal into a mold, then allowing it to cool and solidify to achieve the required shape. This method is highly suitable for large-scale mass production using the same mold set, which can also be reused for repeat orders.
Folding
Metal sheets are bent at a certain angle by clamping them and passing them through a press brake machine without affecting their structural integrity. During this process, the metal workpiece is clamped between the die and the punch, while the force from the punch bends the workpiece into the desired shape.
Folding is often confused with bending because both processes change the angle and shape of sheet metal and can produce similar results. However, bending refers to the general process of curving or forming angles in metal, while folding specifically creates sharp folds and straight fold lines on sheet metal.
To put it simply, bending is a broader process that can include multiple folding operations to complete the fabrication.
Machining
This fabrication method includes several smaller operations such as drilling, turning, and milling to ensure the component meets technical requirements.
The drilling process uses rotating cutting tools and drill bits to create holes inside the material.
Turning is a process in which the metal workpiece rotates on a lathe machine while the cutting tool moves linearly to remove material along the diameter, creating different shapes and ensuring extremely precise dimensions.
Milling is the process of using a rotating cutting tool to remove material from the workpiece in order to create the desired shape.
Welding
This is one of the most common metal fabrication methods used to join metal components together through a combination of heat and pressure. Common welding methods today include stick welding, arc welding, MIG welding, TIG welding, and flux-cored arc welding.
